A new 9-8-8 dialing code has been designated by Congress as an easier method for callers experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK), but many states are not yet prepared for this transition. Though the new number is scheduled to go live on July 16, 2022, a lack of federal funding has hindered states from being equipped to implement new systems so that they can effectively respond to calls by then.
Please ask your legislators to support the recently introduced 9-8-8 Implementation Act of 2022 (H.R. 7116), which will deliver much-needed federal guidance and resources to enable states to establish and streamline their 9-8-8 systems and align crisis services before the July 16 start date. The support of state and federal leaders to enact this legislation will save lives.
The passage of this legislation will help make resources and support available for states to build the infrastructure needed to bolster the capacity and coordination of this national crisis care system. It will take a significant investment to implement the new 9-8-8 system, and H.R. 7116 will meet this need by prioritizing resources to make sure anyone who dials 9-8-8 will receive swift and safe care.
We hope that you’ll join us and ask your legislators to support H.R. 7116, the 9-8-8 Implementation Act of 2022, to help the nation officially transition to the new three-digit dialing code to save lives.
