NBCC Confidentiality Policy

The National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. and Affiliates (NBCC) understands that security and protection of privacy are necessary in a credentialing process. Therefore, the utmost care is taken to ensure all applicant and certificant documentation, including application status and examination scores, remains confidential. No information about your file is shared with other individuals or organizations without your express written permission.

The application for NBCC certification stipulates that data provided by or obtained from an applicant may be used for research purposes, and completion of the application authorizes such use of the data. The use of applicant or examinee data for any research project, study or activity must have prior approval from the NBCC Board of Directors.

Individual examination score report data is retained in an examinee’s NBCC master file. Access to the information in the file is restricted to members of the NBCC Board of Directors, authorized NBCC staff members, and NBCC research and evaluation consultants, except where the individual provides a written request for distribution of examination scores to another agency or organization. However, NBCC reserves the right to withhold scores from individuals or agencies when it deems the distribution of the scores to be inappropriate.
